Getting to Know Jasper

Jasper, Alabama is a growing city, with many new people coming here every year to take advantage of the laid-back environment, the great outdoors activities, and the friendly atmosphere. This city has a long history, and there are plenty of things to do, whether you’re looking for a fun weekend or a quiet afternoon with the family.

A Little History

Jasper started off as a simple trading post set up by Lorenzo Dow in the early 1800s. A little more than 20 years later saw Dr. Gordon Musgrove donating some land that would be used for the town, where he would then build the log cabin that would serve as the school, church, and courthouse. Still, the city wouldn’t be incorporated until 1887, and it would be named by Hugh Lollar in memory of a soldier in the Revolutionary War, Sgt. William Jasper.

A Green City

Jasper has been designated Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation since 1988. This is a reflection of the city’s ongoing commitment to a greener environment. In order to achieve this designation, a city must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance of some kind.

Some of this initiative is reflected in the parks and recreation department of the city, which is responsible for a wide range of recreational areas throughout the city, ranging from the small community locations to a park that is over 100 acres.

All of these green spaces are great for picnics, walking on the trails, playing with the family, or just sitting back and enjoying the day.
